Clik here to view. Are selfies evolving? Fashions change and it recently emerged that Instagram, the natural habitat of the #selfie, is evolving!
Static photos remain the focus of Instagram but things change fast. The addition of 15-second videos is here and that could mean a change in the #selfie trend. I don’t know about you, but all these changes sometimes make my head spin like a veritable poltergeist, or a nice owl or something – so much so that I feel compelled to take a 15 second video of it or something! However, keeping calm and carrying on comping is the only way forward.
We are in the midst of a photo Selfie competition trend right now, whether that means more of the same or an evolution into #selfie videos – the following KNOW THY SELFIE commandments apply to the current trend and a potential #selfie video trend.
KNOW THY #SELFIE
1) Where did you get that hat, where did you get that HAT?
Scenario: You are entering a selfie competition. You have the perfect ‘look’ that you want to project. You post it into a competition with an attitude of victory! You watch as you gain likes and comments. Looking into the details of those comments is appauling! Ahh…. Everyone is talking about a hat! Why?
Because you took your photo underneath a fruit bowl, or a tower, or where the cat was sitting – and now it looks like your hat. Oh dear!
This is more common than you think! If this happens to you, it’s also a good to charm the judges – you could always turn it around and mention the ‘hat’ as an added extra by combining aspects of the competition with the features of your hat. This is a tenuous strategy so it’s best that you avoid it!
2) Background noise Just as taking care to avoid a hat-crisis, you should also try to avoid a domestic sluttery crisis! That pile of dishes, or the nappy on the floor can take away from all your hard work! Selfie competitions elicit responses from the general public so the last thing you want is to draw attention to the fact that you have been tampering away on your phone for the last three hours to get the perfect shot!
3) Be on Target The target demographic of the promoter needs to be taken into consideration. Parent #selfies with the kids competitions are seeking you looking like a mum – you’d think this was obvious, but a lot of people, maybe trying to buck the trend of ‘mum’ tend to go a little OTT by opting for the ‘Ascot Ladies Day’ pose. It’s a bad look and best avoided if you want to appeal to the promoter. Similarly, if you are trying to win a beauty #selfie – the very least you need to do is brush your hair and conceal those dark circles!
